Session 1Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM)

Traditional Medicine is the oldest form of health care in the world and is used in the prevention, and treatment of physical and mental illnesses. Different societies historically developed various useful healing methods to contest a variety of health- and life-threatening diseases. Traditional Medicine is also variously known as alternative medicine and complementary,  or ethnic medicine, and it still plays an important role in many countries today.

Herbal medicine, also called botanical medicine or phytomedicine, refers to using a plant's seeds, berries, roots, leaves, bark, or flowers for medicinal purposes. Naturopathic medicines and treatment are a distinct primary healthcare profession emphasizing prevention, treatment & optimal health care through the use of therapeutic methods and substances that encourage individuals inherent self-healing plants process. The practice of naturopathic medicines includes evidence based naturopathic medicines, modern and scientific, traditional, naturopathic treatments and practices and empirical methods.

Traditional medicine has a long history of disease prevention and control in public health. Today, a growing number of plants used in traditional medicine are being reported to exhibit a variety of activities in infectious disorders, notably viral infections, and thus could serve as additional antiviral sources. Due to its significant role in sustaining good health, traditional medicines are increasingly being used by various groups in many regions of the world, leading to rising awareness and research. According to the World Health Organization, the objective of "health for all" cannot be accomplished without the use of herbal medicines in basic care. To address increasing public health challenges, the centuries-old medical system is being re-examined. As a result, there is an urgent need to improve the drug development process for natural compounds, not just in the next 10 or 20 years, but also in the next 20-40 years and beyond.

Global acceptance and use of Traditional Medicines and related products continue to assume exponential increase. It is being used more frequently all over the world. However most often these are choices made by the patient. Integrating TM into mainstream health care would require research to understand the efficacy, safety, and mechanism of action of TM systems. As per WHO estimation, around 80% of population from most of Asian and African countries depends on the traditional medicine for primary health care. The market analysis drives for global Traditional Medicine is growing rapid aging population, increase of consumer awareness, less or no side effects, supplying innovations, release of Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMP) for dietary supplements by FDA. Other factors are escalating prices, health budgets calculations of modern medicinal system that has more consumers towards the cost-effective, economical and safe herbal medicine systems. Considering all these factors the market for Traditional medicine is expected to reach $ 115 billion by the end of 2024.

Traditional and Alternative Medicine was actually planned at Taiwan during April 20, 2020 with the theme “Patronizing Healing in a Traditional way” but we ended it as a webinar due to the pandemic situation and it was organized successfully.
